Putting Community First

During the pandemic, I prioritized funding for small business grants, getting rental and utility assistance out to families with the highest need, my office championed the Family Assistance Resource Program, and I worked with Councilwoman Pastor to bridge the digital divide by getting Wifi access into our public housing projects for students learning from home and getting tablets for our elderly receiving telemedicine. All while maintaining the day-to-day City operations.

Safe Roads & Working Lights

The first step to having safe communities is having working streetlights in our neighborhoods and parks. I’m committed to prioritizing and ensuring the timely replacement of nonworking lighting in public spaces.

I also believe our residents deserve safe roads, street signs, and public transit. Through collaboration with my colleagues, the City of Phoenix is paving streets at a record rate and focusing on putting an emphasis on pedestrian safety. I am proud to be endorsed by Urban Phoenix Project, with a shared vision to make Phoenix enjoyable for all - whether you walk, bike, drive, or use public transit.

Accountability & Transparency

Since my election, I have championed efforts to make our City more responsive to our residents. I worked hard to create the Office of Accountability and Transparency, which is a new office created to intake and investigate complaints about officer conduct and officer-involved shootings, and which will provide policy changes and recommendations to the council and the police department.

Additionally, I am in full support of the formation of our Ethics Commission. The initial framework was approved prior to my time on council so I believe we need to give additional thought to putting protections in place to make it a truly independent body. We should focus on ensuring it does not become politically motivated - the members deserve to be free from the pressures of outside influence and special interest.

Educational Opportunity

As a proud product of community colleges, I championed financial assistance for those seeking higher education through Phoenix Promise and other programs for students. I have worked on creating more opportunities for the residents of District 8 to explore different career paths and have opportunities for workforce training. I also support public schools and my wife Alexis sits on the Roosevelt School Board.

Environment & Clean Transit

While on the city council, I approved the city’s Climate Action Plan and have been steadfast in getting the city of Phoenix to be more heat resilient by supporting the creation of the office of Heat Response and Mitigation. District 8 residents often lack access to fresh food sources, therefore I have also invested in local farmers and gardens to provide access to healthy foods for people. I’m a steward of our water and have been vocal about the city’s role in educating residents and investing in technology to manage our water resources.

Residents of South Phoenix deserve quality transportation and working lighting systems for bus stops and rail stations. If re-elected, I continue to prioritize the development of public transportation without sacrificing roads on our main streets. I will work to strengthen local businesses and create coalitions to help gather community insight for future development opportunities. Our platform is focused on increasing the use of public transportation in District 8 and access to clean transportation.

Preserving District 8

I believe in a sustainable green South Phoenix is possible. I want to prioritize the preservation of public parks, community spaces, and South Mountain. In efforts to make our communities green, I’m focused on cleaning the public spaces we have while building a greener Phoenix with more planting of trees and the placement of more recycling bins in city-run public spaces. I will also prioritize access to community recycling information available in English & Spanish.

Reproductive Rights

I believe in every persons bodily autonomy and the right to abortion. I’m currently advocating for the city of Phoenix to take a stance on making sure Phoenicians are not criminalized for providing or seeking abortion services. I also understand that reproductive health is part of the continuum of care for people in my district many of whom have been left out of having health care services. To this end, I’m working with partners to bring more health and wellness spaces and programs to my constituents.

LGBTQ+

I want Phoenix to be an inclusive city. While the state legislature has gone after LGBTQ+ folks’ rights, I have advocated for their inclusion in city investments including providing more support for housing for LGBTQ+ youth.
